In an era characterised by the threatening auditory irritation of lethal drones, the weaponisation of sonic booms, Long Range Acoustic Devices and the coupling of AI and automated acoustic surveillance, this course will explore themes relating to Sonic Warfare. Through close listening and discussion, the sessions will explore issues revolving around sound, affect, cognition and perception, thresholds of audibility, camouflage, the politics of frequency and amplitude and will focus on artistic responses to these themes, ranging from the re-appropriation of the sounds and technologies of war, through to forensic audio.
At the end of the session, participants will create their own short audio essays on related themes of their choosing.
