BOOK NOW
In what ways does language help us or hinder us in creativity? Is there an underlying ‘meaning’ in seeming nonsense? In this workshop, we will think about how words and non-words function in music, and explore how certain works of art use the voice in various ways to bring out a truth more powerful than logical meaning. We will make and share our own work with eachother, inspired by these examples.
\r\n
\r\nJulia Holter is a composer, performer, and recording artist based in Los Angeles. Her interest in sonic mysteries has led her to record in various settings--in her home, outside with a field recorder, and in recording studios—as well as to perform live, often with a focus on the voice and the space between language and babble. She has amassed a body of work that explores melody within free song structures, atmosphere, and the impulses of the voice. Upon the releases of each of her albums Aviary (2018), Have You In My Wilderness (2015), Loud City Song (2013), Ekstasis (2012), and Tragedy (2011), she has performed with an ensemble of creative musicians at venues and festivals throughout the world. She has written music for the Los Angeles Philharmonic and other ensembles, as well as scores for the acclaimed films In My Own Time (2020), Never Rarely Sometimes Always (2020), and Bleed for This (2016) and for the Channel 4 TV series Pure (2019). Julia has also been commissioned to compose a score for the Chorus of Opera North to perform for the 1928 Carl Theodor Dreyer film The Passion of Joan of Arc.
