As a producer and DJ, the persistent contribution of Om Unit (aka Jim Coles) to an ever-changing musical landscape has solidified his place as a true pioneer and stalwart of electronic music. Jim took on the mantle of Om Unit in the late 2000s, and has since sought to challenge himself and his audience by going beyond the confines of typical genres and styles, striving for a more human and daring approach to connecting diverse threads of electronic music in unique ways.

Jim distils and cross-pollinates tropes of breaks, techno, hip-hop, dubstep, ambient, jungle, footwork, and dub into a fluid take on sound system culture and electronic music that sidesteps genre pastiche and creates new potentials for exploration and inspiration, with many following in his footsteps. Under his recently retired Philip D Kick alias, he pioneered the stylistic links between jungle and footwork via a series of acclaimed edits - these tracks led to what is now known as "160" as a movement.

On record his explorations into the deeper end of the electronic music spectrum have come via such releases as his critically acclaimed debut LP "Threads" via Civil Music, 2014's "Inversion" for Metalheadz (an homage to the label's original sound palette via DAT's lent by Goldie himself), 2017's "Self" via his own Cosmic Bridge label and his recent spate of conceptual "Acid Dub Studies" self-releases (complete with 2 sets of remixes from Hodge, Deadbeat, CV313, Yushh, Tapes, Surgeon's Girl and many more). Jim has played more than 500 shows across 30 countries, appearing on diverse lineups from Montreux Jazz Festival to Bass Coast, Waking Life to Mysteryland; he has worked with some of the most acclaimed names in electronic music (Martyn, TM404, Deadbeat, the list is endless...), and has produced mixes for BBC Radio 1, Boiler Room, Resident Advisor, FACT, XLR8R, Rinse FM, Keep Hush, Hör, and dozens of other platforms.

This unique online workshop represents a chance to explore your own creativity by taking a deeper dive in to Om Unit's own processes, philosophies and inspirations, whist also learning the ropes of different types of synthesis as well as how to process sounds in a variety of ways to add character and depth to your own work, in a way that draws from what inspires you, both as a music producer and music fan.

Over five packed, interactive group videocalls, we'll look at:

Synthesis techniques
Software and hardware sound processing techniques
Creative philosophies
Influence, and the power of being a fan
Group and mentor-led feedback sessions

WHERE AND WHEN?

This is an online course, but it involves realtime sessions and contact time with your tutor - it's not a "download these videos and watch them at your leisure" type of thing - it's a real workshop with live lectures, individual tuition, assignments and feedback sessions. The schedule for sessions is as follows (all times are CET):

  • Session 1: 23/10/2024, 19:00 - 21:00 CET
